Parents guide to Maths

EYFS, Yr 1, Yr 2

The children have a daily maths lesson.  There is a big emphasis on using concrete and visual images to support their understanding.  Each year group has a very clear approach to adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying.  This is detailed in the Calculation policy.  To see how your child’s year group approaches maths look at the calculation policy which is included below.

Yr 3, Yr 4, Yr 5, Yr 6

Older children also have a daily maths lesson.  The strategies for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing become more complex so they can manage bigger numbers.  Children use objects and pictures to help when they get stuck.

How you can help at home

Help your child to learn their times tables.  Your child’s teacher will give you advice and tell you which tables your child needs to learn.

Key Instant Recall Facts
Children are successful in maths when they have some facts that they can instantly recall.  We call these Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs for short).  There is a new Key Instant Recall Fact every half term and children practice these daily.  You can help your child by practicing these at home.
